Serge Schoemaker Architects converted the three story mansion completely and extended the ground floor into the garden to fulfil the needs of the new owners and their two children. Existing building was to be refurbished to house a garage and storage functions in the ground floor and bedrooms in the upper level. New structure is attached to the existing one with the staircase. The entire building is clearly divided into two volumes - the old one with its historical charm that shows its primary usage and the addition that is a clean contemporary form. The generous way we get through the double doors, comparable to a moving boundary, can programmatically link the pieces, can multiply the size of a room holding some open doors, or even in a situation of absolute permeability when all doors are open.
