You can't see the shop behind the sliding doors until they open. <br /><br />There, behind an adjacent second set of doors, is a pavilion. The MacBain Community Centre is a multi-stakeholder civic project that combines several community programs under one roof. A central lobby, with reception and snack bar, provides common access and views to several key building areas: the public library, gymnasium and swimming pools. The YMCA of Niagara operates the gymnasium, courts, fitness and aquatic centre for the City of Niagara Falls Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture. Multi-purpose facilities for community meeting and wellness functions are shared with Heart Niagara, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Niagara and the Coronation 50+ Seniors Centre. A former state office building, the facility is ideally located on Madison’s popular Capitol Square with outstanding views of both the Capitol dome and Lake Mendota. The adaptive re-use of this prominent building will play an important role in the life of the Square. <br /><br />Completed in August 2010, the Madison Children’s Museum is intended to be an active learning environment rather than a typical museum of static displays.

The partitions in the apartment’s public zones were demolished to create a large, open living space. Taking advantage of the existing exposed beam layout as a framework, plaster art walls were suspended from the roof structure and hover just above the floor. Large millwork pieces animate each room creating a playful and practical counterpoint to the discrete cellular spaces of the original plan.
